The Walking Dead Season 4: Is Eugene Porter’s Mullet For Real?

We’re glad that The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 11: “Claimed” gave us a better understanding of Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), and Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos). We were really intrigued by their stories and dynamic but sometimes it was difficult to pay attention to what they were saying when we couldn’t get past their ridiculous appearances.

Don’t get us wrong, we loved that the characters comic book creator Robert Kirkman envisioned seemed to translate seamlessly to the small screen, but between Rosita’s sexy-yet-wildly-impractical getup, Abraham’s red handlebar mustache and Eugene’s epic mullet, we occasionally found ourselves bursting out into bits of spontaneous laughter.

The Hollywood Reporter chatted with Josh McDermitt in advance of Sunday’s episode and one of the first things they asked him about was Eugene’s trademark mullett. For starters, is it real? “Luckily my hair was already grown out. I was actually going to get a haircut the week that the audition came down, but something happened and I didn't get to it,” Josh revealed.

So how do they create that unique ‘do? We’ll let Josh explain. “I'm a natural blond and they cut my hair into a flattop and left the longer hair in the back so they could clip in extensions and dye it all brown. When they take those extensions out, I look ridiculous. I was so embarrassed running around that I asked someone to take me to the store so I could get a hat because I was so mortified at what I looked like. They took me to Wal-Mart and I walked in and there were like five people with the same haircut. I thought, ‘You know what? I'm OK,’” he said with a laugh.

Personally, we think the mullet (which was trending on Twitter during the episode) is pretty awesome and gives us some good insight into who Eugene is, but what do you think of the look? Do you think it fits the character, or is it too distracting? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
