At the start of The Walking Dead Season 4 viewers were introduced to a new version of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) known as Farmer Rick. Farmer Rick, unlike Cop Rick or the Ricktator before him favored toiling the land instead of leading and making crucial decisions for a group, and he most certainly didn’t approve of using guns to kill walkers unless it was absolutely necessary. Rick desperately clung to this version of himself, but once the flu began to spread and he had to kill his pigs, we knew it was the beginning of the end for Rick’s short-lived career as a man of the land.
As the season progressed, Rick slowly got back to himself, though he was still wary of making any major decisions aside from banishing Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) from the prison back in Episode 4. But The Governor’s (David Morrissey) deadly attack on the prison in the midseason finale seems to have changed all that.
TheWalkingDead.com talked to comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman after Episode 11: "Claimed,” and he confirmed that Farmer Rick is a thing of the past. “Yeah, Farmer Rick kind of went away during the beating he took from The Governor. I think this is a guy who’s very much back on his heels at this point,” Robert explained. “He’s trying to do whatever he can to survive. Rick has always been a character who recognizes you have to have certain preparations in order to survive in this world, and Farmer Rick only emerged because of the safety that the Prison provided, so now that that’s been taken away we’re certainly going to be seeing Rick Grimes rise to the challenge of being on his own again. What we saw this episode is a big part of that.”
In “Claimed” Rick proved that he’s still got what it takes to survive in this world, and even killed someone who he perceived to be a threat with his bare hands. Yeah, we’d say his days of naming pigs and planting veggies are long gone.
We’re not sure if we’ll get a glimpse of Rick, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), and Michonne (Danai Gurira) in this Sunday’s Episode 13: “Alone”, but last we saw that trio they were headed towards Terminus, which we’re still not sure we can trust.
