Game of Thrones Season 4 Filming: Why Are They in Iceland?

We now know a little more about Game of Thronesmysterious summertime Icelandic filming schedule, thanks to the partying habits of certain GoT stars.

According to News of Iceland, both Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) were spotted enjoying some ale over the weekend at The Big Lebowski bar (amazing name) in Reykjavik, Iceland. The sight of these two actors seems to indicate that, for the first time, some scenes based in King’s Landing will be shot in the island nation.

Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, we know that Tyrion should remain in King’s Landing, probably until the end of Season 4. We also know that Littlefinger, whom we saw sailing away from King’s Landing in Season 3, probably hasn’t actually left yet.

Other characters we know for sure are filming in Iceland include Arya and The Hound. The two are in their countryside-wandering phase, and the country should provide some rich landscapes for the setting. Producer Chris Newman describes the storyline of the two, and mentions a natural set the show is using to portray an impassable route. Book readers know this to be the route to the Vale, where The Hound originally plans on taking Arya to ransom her to her aunt before concluding that the way is too dangerous.

Game of Thrones will continue filming in Iceland until August 1.
