The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale Is “Deeper, Darker, and Grown Up”, Says Andrew Lincoln

We hate to wish away a perfectly good season on The Walking Dead, but for weeks now we've been hearing that there’s some seriously good stuff coming up for Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and it’s admittedly getting pretty difficult for us to contain our excitement.

Truth be told, child soldier and sometimes sociopath Carl has never been one of our favorite TWD characters, but there’s a ton of buzz about at least one episode involving Rick’s only son, which will air in the coming months.

Last month Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) revealed that his on-screen son does something “cool” in the mid-season premiere, and at Walker Stalker Con this past weekend in Atlanta Andrew expanded a bit, though he didn’t note whether or not he was talking about the same episode.

“Just wait and see” what Chandler Riggs will do soon, Andrew told fans at a cast panel. “He has done one of the best episodes certainly this season. He kind of carries it. It’s beautiful when it’s done. I was on set that day and I just watched him, and now it’s time for me to learn from him. He’s a serious actor, this kid.”

As for what the remainder of Season 4 has in store, Andrew said that in his opinion this is likely the best season yet

“Crazy s—t’s gonna happen,” he said about the balance of the season. “What I would say about this season is that I think it’s the most detailed story. It reminds me very very much of the first season in storytelling and character.”

As for the always highly-anticipated mid-season finale? Andrew echoed similar statements from other cast and crew members singing the prized episode’s praises. “Rest assured — the mid-season finale is the biggest one we’ve ever done on every single level,” he dished. “Storywise, emotion, and just the scale.”

And if you thought the mid-season finale was good, just wait until you catch the Season 4 ender. “I just read the last episode, and it’s like nothing else,” Andrew continued. “We go into much deeper, darker, grown-up space. It feels like the show is really growing up. Hold on to your hats, is all I’ll say.”

Deeper, darker, grown-up space sounds like just what we need to propel us into Season 5! Do you have any predictions for the Season 4 finale? If you do, feel free to share them below!

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
