Downton Abbey February 16 Synopsis: More Trouble for Anna Bates?
With the finale of Downton AbbeySeason 4 fast approaching (it’s on February 23!) we’re all ears for anything even remotely related to life at the Abbey. This year’s series has already thrown us some unexpected and, in some cases, most unwanted curveballs.
So what should we expect from this year’s finale? The episode synopsis is out and we’re ready to dissect it, line by line. Let the hypothesizing begin!
“Rosamund hatches a plan to held Edith out of her predicament, but will Violet see straight through it?” Aunt Rosamund (Samantha Bond) has proven herself a much-needed friend and confidant to Edith (Laura Carmichael) during her recent difficulties, even accompanying her niece to get an abortion. With Edith changing her mind at the last minute and deciding to keep the baby, what happens now? Will Edith tell her family of her unplanned pregnancy or keep it secret and find a family to adopt her child?
As for if good ole Grandmama (Maggie Smith) will figure out Edith’s plan, we wouldn’t put it past her. The Dowager may tend toward tradition, but she’s likely seen a thing or two in her day.

“Isobel is on the receiving end of some unexpected attention, while Mary asks Gillingham for a favour.” Could Doctor Clarkson (David Robb) be renewing his proposal to Isobel (Penelope Wilton)? We wouldn’t necessarily be against the widow getting some company, but what’s this about Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) asking Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) for a favor (or favour, as the English would have it)?
“Rose has her nose put out of join when plans don’t go her way, and Alfred realises too late that he may have made a mistake.” We have a feeling we know what’s put Rose MacClare (Lily James) in a snit. As for Alfred (Matt Milne), is his mistake a professional one — he doesn’t want to be a chef now? — or a romantic one — Ivy or Daisy? Ivy or Daisy? Ivy or Daisy?
“Just when Bates and Anna seem to be coming through the worst of their troubles, some unexpected news gives her fresh cause for concern.” Of all the points in the synopsis, this is the one that has the most worried. Lord Gillingham’s return last episode meant his valet, Mr. Green (Nigel Harman), also reappeared much to the dismay of Anna (Joanne Froggatt). Green, of course, is the man who raped the lady’s maid during the January 12 episode. Anna has always told her husband, Bates (Brendan Coyle), that a stranger committed the foul act so as to prevent Bates, a former convict, from seeking revenge and winding back in jail or, even worse, at the end of a noose.
We already know Anna’s not pregnant by Green so what other “unexpected news” could dredge up more grief? Can’t Anna and Bates just be happy?
