Did you forget about Gareth? We’re finally going to meet the guy this coming Sunday, March 30 on the The Walking Dead Season 4 finale.
Back in November, The Hollywood Reporter said actor Andrew J. West would be joining Season 4 in a "guest star" role with an option to be promoted to series regular in Season 5. His character, Gareth, was said to be "a remix of sorts of an unidentified character from the [comic book] series." In early February, showrunner Scott Gimple told Entertainment Weekly the character is “kind of from the books, kind of not totally from the books. Comic fans would not know him. He was an invention that was inspired for the show."
Gareth was supposed to have a big presence and play an important role. So we waited. And waited. And speculated.
As The Hollywood Reporter noted after Episode 15, we’ve still yet to see Gareth. What could director/producer Greg Nicotero tell fans about his arrival in Ep 16? “We're at Terminus and we've seen some of our group arrive there, and it's safe to say that that's where we will find him.” We’ll find him, but what will he be like? Good guy? Bad guy? In the middle?
At first, we thought maybe he would be a TV version of Chris, leader of The Hunters, but then we joined the bandwagon speculating that Gareth was closer to Father Gabriel Stokes — especially when a car with a white cross on the back drove away from the funeral home with Beth inside. (THR asked Greg if it’s fair to expect we’ll see Beth again in the finale. “I can't tell you that,” he said.)
THR also shared speculation that Gareth is one of the cannibals, aka part of The Hunters. Greg gave no real response to that, just turning things back to Joe’s (Jeff Kober) group of Marauders: “That's an interesting theory,” he said. “The people that have survived in this world have survived at a cost. The way Joe and his group, the way that our group have survived, they've lost people and they've had to do things. This entire season was based on the premise of, ‘Can you do what it takes to stay alive?’ Crossing that line between the brutality and the humanizing aspect of life, and can you be compassionate and still survive in this world or are you always going to be a bad guy? In different worlds and different perceptions, who is a good guy and who is a bad guy? In Joe's perception, Joe isn't a bad guy, he's a good guy who has just figured out a way to survive and use a set of rules that work for him. So it'll be interesting to see how things play out and how fans respond to what we've set up in the last episode.”
Interesting. The “what we’ve set up” line may tie into this major cliffhanger we’re expecting. How will Gareth be tied to Terminus and whatever they’re setting up for Season 5? Does he have a connection to Beth? Is Beth at Terminus? Are, um, parts of her there?
What are your expectations for Gareth? Feel free to share your thoughts and theories below!
The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
