The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale: Rick Grimes Will “Shock People” — How?

What could happen to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) that would “shock” you on The Walking Dead Season 4 finale? Seriously, what could anyone do to shock you at this point?

Sophia’s mom killed two people and set them on fire, then got banished from the group; our beloved Spaghetti Tuesday activities director got his head sliced off by Andrea’s ex-boyfriend; our home base for a season-and-a-half was blasted and overrun with walkers; and two little girls were killed in cold blood, with a lot of fans cheering on the second death.

Now what?

There’s only one episode left — the Sunday, March 30 finale, Episode 16, “A” — and comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman has called it “savage.” The season finale synopsis mentions “brutality” for Rick, and RK added this tease to Entertainment Weekly:

“This is Rick Grimes being pushed to his absolute limit. And if you think you’ve seen that before, you haven’t. And the Rick Grimes that comes out of this is really going to shock people.”

At least that sounds like Rick comes out of it, right? So that’s a possible silver lining … unless he comes out as a walker. Kidding! (We hope. But Lizzie would love that.)

How does he come out, though? What happens to him, and what could shock viewers? Let’s run through some scenarios: He brutally slays Joe (Jeff Kober) and all his Marauders; he brutally kills a bunch of people at Terminus, maybe with his own hands (or teeth); he … punches Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)? No, no. He wouldn’t do that. Um, the CGI would be expensive and they probably won’t go there, but he could lose a limb.

There’s a shot at the end of the promo with Rick looking beat up — again, this poor guy, he never catches a break — and he has a shell-shocked, haunted look on his face. What is he feeling? What humanity-testing stuff does he do?

He may be shocked by his own actions, and maybe Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are shocked too, but if Rick is the one who brings out the brutality, would viewers be shocked or just glad to see The Ricktator kicking butt? A lot of fans cheered the death of “Crazy Lizzie,” even though she’s just a messed up kid, so they’d probably be fine with Rick upping his own human death count. Brutal Ricktator > Farmer Rick and his iPod.

What do you think will happen to Rick to shock viewers? Could anything shock you at all or is RK just working some spin and no one will be that shocked?

The Walking Dead Season 4 finale airs Sunday, March 30, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
