The big ugly “glorified cold” spreading through the prison on The Walking Dead Season 4 is going to claim more lives. But probably not all lives.
Right now there are three fronts fighting the illness — Hershel The Hero (Scott Wilson) with his elderberry tea, to try and slow down the sickness; Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carol (Melissa McBride) out on a mini supply run for medicine; and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Tyreese (Chad Coleman), and Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) on the larger supply run at the veterinary school, as started in Episode 3 and continuing next week into Episode 4, “Indifference.”
So we have hope — especially for sick Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), who has been with us from the start.
It was Glenn’s voice that piped into the tank in Atlanta on Season 1, when Rick got himself into quite the pickle. Glenn’s saved so many people and put his neck on the line for countless others, without ever getting too much in return besides the crap beat out of him by guys like Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker). (Still miss you, though, Merle!)
Right now, Glenn is very sick. But if a “major character” will die from this illness, it’s probably not going to be Glenn. Not saying Glenn lives forever, but the rumors and speculation that tend to fly across the Internet suggest Glenn lives at least until the mid-season finale (Episode 8) … but perhaps Hershel does not.
All rumors should be taken with stroke-inducing amounts of salt, but it makes sense. Scare people with the possibility of Glenn’s death from this sickness, but don’t go through with it. Self-sacrificing Hershel would be a big enough loss, but Glenn — there’s more for Glenn to do than Hershel, not just physically but also in terms of the comics storyline. The show doesn’t always follow the comics, but it just feels like this isn’t The End for Glenn.
But who knows. The Powers That Be keep messing with our minds, so for all we know Glenn is toast, Hershel lives forever, and Lizzie ends up marrying Carl and starting a new child-led dictatorship. Then we’ll really know the world has ended.
