Game of Thrones Season 4: Go Inside the Special Effects (VIDEO)

Game of Thrones Season 4 had a number of memorable special effects, from impressive new locations like Braavos, to dragons flambéing goats, to sword-wielding skeletons. For the curious, VFX studio Mackevision has just released a video which pulls back the curtain on how some of these movie-quality effects were created.

First things first, you know all those giant castles on the horizon that people are always riding to? Turns out they’re all fake! The video shows the layering process and how the castles gets inserted seamlessly into the scenery. Also, even though it seems to us like it would be easier to sail an actual boat and film it, the show also uses fake boats! This is seriously mind blowing stuff, people. It shows just how much special effects work goes into making this show. It’s not just the dragons, virtually every shot has been digitally altered to create this world.

The video focuses on the things you mostly wouldn’t realize are computer-generated, so there are no fighting skeletons or dragons to be seen. Of course, that could be because the fighting skeletons and dragons are real, in which case, we want to see a video about them!
