We’re now four episodes into The Walking Dead Season 4, and we have yet to catch even a glimpse of The Governor (David Morrissey). The Gov. was Team Prison’s No.1 enemy last season, so you think he’d be front and center in Season 4. But as TWD executive producer Gale Anne Hurd explains to Yahoo TV, the writers have their reasons for keeping the big bad hidden thus far.
“They have bigger fish to fry at this point,” Gale says of our surviving crew. And as for why Michonne (Danai Gurira) has given up looking for her nemesis, “When everything is going well, and they're growing crops, and they have essentially a peaceful existence, you can pursue [him], whether it's revenge, or even a hobby, but not when their lives are in such jeopardy.”
Jeopardizing everything at this point is the deadly flu, a sickness that is poised to take even more lives before it’s done wreaking havoc with Team Prison.
As Gale points out, less focus on The Governor has also meant more focus on some of the show’s key players, many of whom we are finally getting a chance to know on a deeper level. “We have a lot of story, and we have a lot of characters. That's what's been wonderful. We've had opportunity, without having to introduce The Governor, to get to know the characters more deeply and see how they react with another threat.”
And let’s not forget, part of the trick of withholding The Gov. for so long is that when he does grace us with his presence — which is rumored to happen in two standalone episodes in the coming weeks — the reveal will be that much more powerful.
As for what’s in store for the more immediate future in TWD-land? Gale warns fans to be ready for something big and unexpected. “I would say what's about to happen … you certainly won't see it coming. I assure you of that. And it's not just one thing. It's cumulative.”
There's speculation that The Governor may appear at the end of Episode 5: "Internment", so maybe that's what Gale is talking about, or perhaps we will finally find out who has been feeding rats to the walkers? Only time will tell!
The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
