Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Halloween Episode: Could One of These Characters Be “A”?

Pretty Little Liars just released a slew of promos for the Season 4 Halloween special, and they tease a big reveal: the identity of “A.” The 30-second vids are all identical, save for the hashtag that accompanies them #jAke, #monA, #shanA, #jennA, #ariA, #ezrA each implying a different PLLer is the big baddie. Is PLL just teasing us, or will we really find out who “A” is in the two-hour Halloween ep? We break down Jake, Mona, Shana, Jenna, Aria, and Ezra’s odds of being the mysterious antagonist below.

Given that we’ve seen no evidence that Jake (Ryan Guzman) will even be in the Halloween episode, we’re skeptical that he could be “A.” Not only has Jake not been around for very long (that we know of), but he doesn’t seem to be as interested in Aria’s friends as he should be if he is plotting their demise. On the other hand, that could just make him good at his “A” job. He was found alone outside Paige’s lakehouse around the time someone tried to kill Jenna. Plus, he has mad martial arts skills that would make sneaking around Rosewood and getting out of tricky situations easy.

Likelihood: Low. As good as Jake would be at being “A,” this would be a pretty boring reveal. Jake has no emotional connection to the non-Aria Liars and, as far as we can tell, he probably won’t even be around for the entirety of Season 4.

Mona’s (Janel Parrish) the only potential on this list who has any actual (admitted) experience as “A.” She was the original Tammy Texter who harassed the Liars into a panic in the first two seasons of PLL. She claims to have given up her “A” ways to join Team Liar, but we’re not so sure. Once a liar, always a liar. Now that Mona is back in Radley, she has the space and the relative privacy to continue her emotional terrorism. Did Mona ever give up her “A” machinations, or has she been the bully all along?

Likelihood: Fair. We never count Mona out of anything.

So far, Shana hasn’t had much to do besides lead Jenna around, but what if her role is larger than any of the Liars have suspected? What if she’s leading everyone around as “A”?! We first grew suspicious of Shana because of her connection to the Rosewood costume shop. She was the one rented out the Queen of Hearts costume for the Halloween train. Since then, she’s only popped up in more suspicious scenarios. Most recently, Spencer spotted her in Ravenswood. Given that the both the summer finale and Halloween ep seems to take place in the creep-tastic town, Shana has jumped to the top of our suspect list.

Likelihood: High. We still don’t know what Shana’s connection to Ravenswood or Jenna is, but it can’t be good…

We’ve written about our Jenna (Tammin Sursok) suspicions before. After she almost drowned earlier this season, the possibility of Jenna being “A” seemed less likely. But, given this PLL tease, we’re not so sure. Jenna has reason to hate the Liars, opportunity to do it given her frequent disappearances, and is a proven liar (pretended she was still blind when she wasn’t). Can we trust anything she says or does? Yes, it appears someone tried to kill Jenna, but that doesn’t disqualify her from the “A” game. We’re guessing “A” has made more enemies than anyone…

Likelihood: High.

It’s long been a popular fan theory that Aria (Lucy Hale) is “A.” While we appreciate the simplicity of this theory (“A” stands for Aria!), we are hesitant to take it too seriously. Aria has been harassed along with everyone else. She has made life choices like sending her mother to a foreign country to keep her out of harm’s way that suggest Aria is genuinely fearful for the people she loves. On the other hand, Aria has been around from the beginning and is privy to the Liars’ secrets. Whoever “A” is, she has to have some kind of personality disorder, right? That could explain some of Aria as “A”’s paradoxical behavior.

Likelihood: Low. This would be an intriguing reveal, but it would completely undermine the fabric of the show. If a reveal like this were to happen, it would have to happen at the end of the show. Given that PLL has at least one more season, it’s unlikely Aria is “A” at least right now.

Ezra (Ian Harding) is either the world’s least observant boyfriend or the world’s cleverest antagonist. He dated Aria for three seasons and never seemed to catch on to the fact that she was being hardcore harassed by “A.” Ezra appears at the most suspicious of times, including post-Halloween train disaster and, from the looks of the Halloween ep promo, in Ravenswood. Does he have an impeccable sense of timing, or is he already on site because he is the one causing these “A” shenanigans?

Likelihood: Fair. It’s hard to imagine PLL would be ballsy enough to name Ezra “A,” but we’ve learned from Toby’s time on the “A” Team, that “A” Team membership can be deceiving.

Do you think “A” could be one of these characters? Will is/her identity be revealed in the Halloween ep? Share your theories in the comments below!
