The Walking Dead Season 4: How Long Has The Governor Been Spying on Team Prison?

The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 5: “Internment” was loaded with the action that has been largely missing from the latest season thus far. Between various members of Team Prison dying left and right thanks to this nasty flu and the fence officially crumbling and letting a horde of walkers in, we don’t think our group will be able to withstand much more.

Unfortunately, it looks like things are only about to go from bad to worse for Team Prison. As the final moments of the November 10 episode revealed, The Governor (David Morrissey) was shown watching the prison from a distance.

We don’t yet know the full extent of his motives, though David did suggest he may not be motivated by revenge, as many would have suspected since Michonne (Danai Gurira) killed his daughter, and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) accelerated Woodbury’s demise. The British actor told Entertainment Weekly, “He’s looking at the building, I would suggest, rather than the people in it.”

The reveal that The Gov. had been eyeing the prison was creepy enough, but just how long has he been casing the joint? Has he been waiting to pounce on the prison ever since the remaining Woodbury settlers fled to Rick and his team’s adobe after The Gov.’s spontaneous massacre at the end of Season 3? Does he have a mole on the inside feeding him information? Or is his decision to watch from a distance a more recent development?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Yeun (Glenn Rhee) offered his best guess for how long the big bad has been watching the prison. “I'm not sure. He's always had an idea where the prison was because he may have been there before. Maybe he needed to regroup, maybe he needed to figure something out? We shall see!”

Though Steven’s answer was understandably vague, it does sound like we’ll find out just what The Governor has been up to all this time pretty soon. Next week’s episode (airing November 17) and the installment after that will be The Governor’s standalone episodes, so we’re sure we’ll get answers to many of our questions then.

Do you think The Gov. has been spying on Team Prison for quite some time, or is this a newer development? Weigh in below!

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
