The Walking Dead Season 4: Is Eugene Really THAT Smart?

The Walking Dead’s Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) claims to know what caused the zombie outbreak and how to remedy it, but is this doofy, mulletted man really the genius he claims to be? Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) seems to think so, but we’re not so sure. In the comics, Eugene turns out to be lying about knowing the cure, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if his TV counterpart followed suit. chatted with Josh before March 23rd’s Season 4, Episode 15: “Us,” and they asked if he happens to know what Eugene’s doctorate is in. “I don’t, specifically. They’re actually pretty secretive with the information that they give you, just because, I think, partly, they want to release it at a certain time,” Josh began before delving into how he views Eugene. “In kind of the research and backstory that I did, I think he’s a bio-chemical scientist. He claims to know what caused the apocalypse and how to stop it. I mean… to me, right there, [that] says he knows a lot of stuff about bio chemical engineering and that sort of thing.”

That’s not bad logic, but AH still had their doubts about Eugene’s intelligence. When they asked Josh if his character’s doctorate was obtained online the 35-year-old actor let out a hearty laugh before AH recalled how badly he handled the gun a few episodes back and ended up destroying the truck.

But if you also think about it, how many scientists do you know [who] can handle a machine gun properly?” Josh countered. “They’re used to dealing with beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks and that sort of thing. I mean, they don’t really know how to work an AR-15.” We gotta admit he has a point there, and we’re still not entirely convinced that Eugene didn’t wreck the truck on purpose for some reason.

Viewers got to see more of Eugene in last night’s Episode 15, and when he was talking about how he tracked Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson) through the tunnel he sounded pretty intelligent to us. In the spirit of full disclosure we were never that great at math, so he could have been making up everything, but if that’s the case at least he did so convincingly!

Do you think TV Eugene is a smarty pants who knows how to find a cure for this epidemic, or will he follow in his comic book counterpart’s footsteps and be totally full of it? Tell us what you think below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 finale airs Sunday, March 30, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
