The Walking Dead Season 4: Is the Sanctuary Safe?

We finally got news on the “sanctuary” teased earlier on The Walking Dead Season 4 — but do you trust it?

While driving to the veterinary school to get medicine back on Episode 3, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) fiddle with the car radio and they hear a message with a broken voice saying something about “survive … alive.” In the Comic-Con extended trailer a female voice says "Sanctuary ... those who arrive, survive."

On Episode 10, Ty and the girls saw a sign for sanctuary (“those who arrive, survive”) and they were told to follow the tracks to get there. (We knew those train tracks would be important!)

But who left that message and what is the sanctuary?

In Episode 3 of this season of Talking Dead, TWD producer Gale Anne Hurd teased, "Those of you who've read the comic book might have an indication of what it could or could not be, but it offered sanctuary. As we know in this world sanctuary could be a very complicated thing. It could be someplace you want to go and really is what it says it is, or maybe it's not quite what's promised."

Nothing in this zombie apocalypse world is ever safe for very long, but there are actually several possibilities for the “sanctuary” in question.

Spoilers ahead from the comics:

As we noted before, it could be the Alexandria Safe-Zone, which is a place the group ends up in the comics. The Season 4 finale is called “A,” which could be a reference to the Safe-Zone. But that's in Alexandria, Virginia, and our group is in Georgia. How strong is the signal that could send out that message? The radio message also possibly came from Fort Benning, which is where our group was headed before they lost Sophia and ended up at the farm. (Those guys in the bar said the fort was overrun, but that was then and who knows if they were even telling the truth at the time.)

If the “sanctuary” is a trap and not really safe … maybe it's connected to The Hunters, who are also featured in the comics? Gulp. Gale recently teased, “There are also people, perhaps, just as evil as the Governor out there.” Do you think she meant the cannibal survivors?

We have a little bit of hope for the sanctuary, mostly because 1) the Episode 13 (March 9) synopsis reads "One group finds a shelter; a group has a realization about protection” and the shelter could be related to the sanctuary; and 2) the season is meant to end on a more hopeful note, leaving the group in a position of having something like a prison base for Season 5.

Also, there was a notice about actress Anissa Matlock playing someone called “Featured Terminan” for Episode 16, “A.” “Terminus” was listed on the big map on Episode 10.

What do you think about the sanctuary? Do you trust it? Is it good news or bad?

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
