The Walking Dead Season 4: Kyla Kenedy (Mika) Talks “Intense” Scenes With Melissa McBride

The Walking Dead’s Kyla Kenedy (Mika Samuels) is a little cutie patootie, and she got us smiling in her new Q&A with Daily Dead when she referred to show honchos Scott Gimple and Greg Nicotero as “Mr. Scott” and “Mr. Greg.”

She’s a charmer, but Kyla is also doing some formidable acting work as 10-year-old Mika. She and show sister Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino) are major new characters on Season 4, with just about the most messed-up childhoods you can imagine.

The second half of Season 4 is about to start, and a recent promo showed Mika looking wide-eyed with fear as she fired a gun. So we know more dark times are ahead for the sisters, as they wander those train tracks in rural Georgia and hopefully find some kind of shelter with Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and maybe Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) (and Judith?). We know Carol is returning in the back half, and folks on set in Georgia have seen her with Tyreese and some young’uns, so maybe they form a little family unit in the second half.

Kyla couldn’t share any spoilers with Daily Dead, but she did talk about her beloved castmates. At one point, she was asked what she enjoyed most about working with Melissa McBride. “I LOVED EVERYTHING about working with her!” Kyla responded, and we can’t blame her for that enthusiasm. “Our scenes were so intense and there was such a roller coaster of emotions we had to have. A lot of times Melissa and I would start getting into character together before our takes so we could really be in the moment. She really taught me a lot.”

TWD set is filled with great acting mentors, and Kyla said everyone on set treated her like family from day one. “Lauren Cohan [Maggie] came to my trailer the first day just to introduce herself and say HI!! They all made me feel so at home. It was so obvious how much they all love the show, each other, and how their all so focused and committed to making it the best show on TV.” She shared a favorite on-set story about how “Mr. Greg” came up behind her and made zombie sounds to scare her, which she thought was pretty funny and got the whole cast and crew laughing.

Working on TWD has to be a great experience at any age, but this show is definitely geared more toward adults. Kyla said she’s seen the episodes she’s in, “But sometimes when it gets too scary I close my eyes.” Sometimes we do the same!

Are you curious to see what’s next for young Mika and Lizzie? Do you suspect trouble is ahead for either or both, or will they survive to see Season 5?

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9, “After,” on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
