The Walking Dead Season 4: Lizzie Shooting Alisha Is Part of a “Greater Story” Involving Carol

There was no shortage of shocking moments in The Walking Dead Season 4 mid-season finale, but with Hershel Greene’s (Scott Wilson) brutal beheading and The Governor’s (David Morrissey) double demise at the hands of Michonne (Danai Gurira) and then Lilly Chambler (Audrey Marie Anderson) little Lizzie’s gun-wielding ways were overlooked.

As Team Prison fought off The Gov. and his crew, Lizzie decided that instead of getting on the bus to safety, she and the other kids needed to do whatever they could to help the others and stay alive, just as Carol (Melissa McBride) had taught them before she was banished.

In a crucial moment, Lizzie shot Tara’s girlfriend, Alisha, and another dude as they were preparing to finish Tyreese (Chad Coleman). Lizzie is hardly the first kid in The Walking Dead universe to arm herself — have you met Carl?! — but Scott Gimple assures us that having the little girl fire a gun and kill an enemy was so much more than a sensational moment.

In an interview with Vulture, the showrunner starts off talking about Carol’s “natural” evolution, and insists that even though we didn’t see her in the mid-season finale, her presence was easily detected.

“It seemed very natural that she would settle into the role that she did this season as a very determined protector of the prison, and especially the children of the prison,” Scott says of badass Carol. “And though she wasn’t in the mid-season finale, we could feel her presence.”

Carol was no more present than when Lizzie shot Alisha square in the forehead. “I like to say that scene, however sensational it is in the moment, was there to serve that Carol story,” Scott continues. “We’ll be addressing that in the future. It’s all part of a greater story. It’s important to know that that wasn’t just some big sensational moment.”

We know that Carol will return sooner or later, and we really hope she crosses paths with Lizzie again. It seems like Carol needs a daughter just as much as Lizzie needs a mother.
