The Walking Dead Season 4: Lizzie’s Death Was Inevitable, Carol Had No Choice But to Kill Her

Earlier on this season of The Walking Dead, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) made a rash decision when she decided to kill David and Karen (Tyreese’s girlfriend) after they came down with that deadly flu. That call, though made with the hope of preventing the fatal sickness from spreading, got Carol banished from the prison by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) who reasoned that he couldn’t have Carol around his family. That last bit is ironic considering Carol is currently one of the two people caring for baby Judith, but we digress.

Carol made another shocking decision in the March 16 episode of TWD when she shot Lizzie Samuels (Brighton Sharbino) in the back of the head after Lizzie killed her sister Mika Samuels (Kyla Kenedy). Before Lizzie stabbed her sis we saw just how unhinged she had become, and our jaws dropped to the floor when Lizzie told Carol that killing a walker was the same thing as killing a living, breathing human being.

Melissa had said that she felt both Lizzie and Mika’s deaths were inevitable because Mika wouldn’t kill anything living while Lizzie wouldn’t kill anything dead, and now she’s going one step further by saying that Carol had no other choice but to kill Lizzie.

The actress tells The Hollywood Reporter, “No, I don't think there was really any other option. There's a lot of nature vs. nurture going on in this episode to look at. As much as it broke Carol's heart to have to do this and to realize this had to be done, when they were walking toward the flowers in that scene and Lizzie says, ‘You're mad at me and I'm sorry.’ You'd think she'd be sorry for stabbing her sister to death but instead she's sorry for pointing gun at her and she just doesn't get it.”

Melissa’s right. Even in the final moments of her life Lizzie still didn’t understand that what she did was wrong. If she had shown some remorse than Carlol may have acted differently, but given the specifics of the situation we tend to agree with Melissa that her character had no other choice.

Do you think Carol was justified in killing Lizzie, or should she have come up with another plan? Share your thoughts with us below!

The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
