The Walking Dead Season 4: Melissa McBride on Brighton and Kyla’s “Heartbreaking” Goodbye

Even though Brighton Sharbino (Lizzie Samuels) and Kyla Kenedy (Mika Samuels) only joined The Walking Dead at the start of Season 4, the two blondies were absorbed into the TWD family right away, which made their already emotional send-offs in Season 4, Episode 14: “The Grove” all the more difficult.

Showrunner Scott Gimple said telling Brighton and Kyla that there characters were going to get killed off was “difficult” but he tried to make it as easy as he could by preparing both of them as much as possible beforehand. While Scott had to tell the girls that they’d be leaving the show, he didn’t work with them on set so he likely wasn’t that affected by their absences, at least not on a personal level.

One person who did act with the fictional Samuels sisters very frequently was Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier) and she talked about bidding farewell to the girls on their last day on set. “It was very somber and bittersweet because we all knew the story was important, we all knew it was difficult, we all knew that we were doing our best work and these kids were so amazing and you want to have them around,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “They very quickly become part of that Walking Dead family. And they’re a joy to work with and so bright and to know this is their last day…I don’t know.”

Still, the cast and the crew did what they could to make Brighton and Kyla’s last day on set memorable, and Melissa is confident that great things are ahead for her former co-stars. “What we really try to do is celebrate who they are and the work that they’ve done and the time that we were able to spend together. We celebrate who they are, but it’s heartbreaking to lose them. I know these kids are going to go and do some great things. But it’s never easy.”

Melissa was kind of like a mother to the girls on set much like she was to them on screen Brighton even said she helped her cut some steak so we can totally understand how and why Melissa grew very close to them.

Are you surprised that Melissa had a hard time saying goodbye, or does it make perfect sense to you? Tell us what you think below!
