If you thought that actress Melissa McBride, who plays Carol Peletier on The Walking Dead would be unsupportive of the burgeoning relationship between her “pookie” Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), then you better think again!
Though Daryl and Beth’s relationship isn’t exactly romantic in nature, the unlikely pair have bonded in the back half of Season 4. They burned down the Moonshine house in Episode 12, and in Episode 13 they found refuge in a funeral home, where they grew even closer.
Melissa, for one, loves what’s developed between those characters. “Oh, I thought that was beautiful. I thought their whole experience together was really important and necessary,” she told AccessHollywood.com of Daryl and Beth’s scenes together in “Alone”. “It was really beautiful what they were bringing out in one another. I don’t sit there and watch it and think this going into a romantic thing, or I don’t try to define what’s going on anywhere, it’s just, what they show me is what it is and I thought that it was beautiful.”
But by the end of Episode 13, Beth was kidnapped and Daryl was all by himself briefly, before being absorbed into Joe’s (Jeff Kober) group. It’s clear Daryl isn’t very fond of his new crew, but he’s staying with these marauders because it’s his best chance at survival. Is Melissa worried about her potential on-screen love now that he’s rolling with a new group of people?
“I don’t know. I worry for anybody that’s out there by themselves like that,” she reasons. “And then he’s obviously surrounded by a bunch of disgusting thugs, but piss him off? Piss Daryl off like that? He is so loyal and loving with his group — the prison group — and that guy talking about Beth that way? And Daryl is so respectful, you know? I just can’t imagine. I saw him take that knife out of — taking that knife out of the sheath and I’m thinking, ‘Ooh, that guy is gone. That guy is gone!’”
Melissa is, of course, referring to Len chastising Daryl because he “lost a piece of tail.” It seemed like Daryl had every intention of killing Len at that moment, but Joe interrupted their conversation and stopped him. However, Joe killed Len later after he lied about planting the rabbit half in Daryl’s bag.
As we head into this Sunday’s Season 4 finale, “A”, Daryl, Joe, and the rest of that crew are headed to Terminus to find Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and to get their revenge for killing their friend, Lou.
Will Daryl be able to warn Rick before it’s too late? Will he finally be reunited with Carol, who is also en route to Terminus? Be sure to share all of your thoughts and theories below!
The Walking Dead Season 4 finale airs Sunday, March 30, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
