Poor Michonne (Danai Gurira) always ends up alone.
It's the zombie apocalypse, so everyone is losing people, but plenty of other characters on The Walking Dead have picked up new relationships and they've lasted. Michonne had her pre-apocalypse family, which she lost. She had her walker "pets," which she had to put down to survive. She had Andrea (Laurie Holden) and lost her a couple of times along the way. And now she's all alone after the prison was destroyed in The Governor’s (David Morrissey) big battle and her buddy Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) had his head chopped off maybe two feet away from her.
She may even be the only post-prison group member totally on her own, which is both fitting and extra sad. Why does she keep having to lose her family?
Danai Gurira talked to Entertainment Weekly about Michonne's path from here. "So to get to the point where all that is lost is severely traumatic for her. What happens to Hershel right next to her, in her presence, something that she couldn’t prevent, that for her is extremely traumatic. You know she likes to take care of business. She had just started to slip into being a member of the community and plugging in and that is huge for her. It’s revolutionary for her. So the loss is pretty extreme. So the question is, how does she metabolize this? How does she handle it?"
This Sunday's Episode 9, “After” should give us big hints. It's meant to stick closely to the comics, which means it will follow Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) after the prison battle, but also show us what Michonne does next. (Will she reunite with them, as she does in the books?) We're meant to see a flashback to her pre-zombie life, where she'll actually smile and be a normal woman, not the badass machine who was just slowly breaking down her walls in the first part of Season 4.
"What’s interesting for Michonne is that she is on the tip of something," Danai continued. "She was on the tip of something in those first eight episodes. Was she going to settle in? Was she starting to open up? Then the trauma hit and I think the big question is, will this clam her back up or open her up? It’s a question of going back to the old her or going on a different path."
Maybe this will prompt her to just shut everyone out again, but we hope not. We want the band to get back together! Danai said "This is a volatile moment" for all of the former Team Prisoners, since they're all suffering from the same instant losses and no one has time to grieve. "This is a scary moment for everybody."
What a shame that no one on the prison council thought to create a disaster plan, telling everyone to meet at the former Woodbury gates or something. But maybe that would be too close to the Season 2 finale. Now the possibilities are endless, and most of them are indeed scary.
Do you think Michonne will connect with Rick, Carl or other group members? If so, when and where? The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
