Pretty Little Liars Season 4: Is Mrs. DiLaurentis Misunderstood?

Jessica DiLaurentis, Alison's mother, is back in a big way on Pretty Little Liars Season 4. She's sharp, snarky, and sometimes borderline cruel — about exactly what you'd expect from the woman who brought Alison into the world. But is she really as bad as she seems, or is there more to her than her severe attitude lets on?

After Season 4, Episode 2: "Turn of the Shoe" aired, Pretty Little Liars showrunner Marlene King wrote, "I think Mrs D is misunderstood, but time will tell. What do you think?"

That's an interesting question. While Mrs. DiLaurentis' comments about Hanna's weight fall strictly into the "grown up mean girl" category, there have definitely been moments where she's seemed more vulnerable and human. For instance, when she told Emily in the Season 4 premiere that it was nice to actually hear someone say Ali's name, or in the flashback where we saw Ali pull her "holding breath" stunt.

On the other hand, the fact that Mrs. DiLaurentis still has all of Ali's stuff and is bringing it into her house is awfully odd. What do you think: Is she a sad woman who can't move on from her daughter's tragic death, or does she know more than she lets on?
