By now, we’ve learned to not get too attached to new characters on The Walking Dead. Remember Season 4’s Zach? Patrick? Dr. S.? Meghan? Still, not all newbies were created equal, and some characters arriving in the second half were given more promotion than others.
For example, three characters straight out of the comics are coming pretty soon: former U.S. Army Sgt. Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), and Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt). Also, we’ve been told a character named Gareth (Andrew J. West) will be coming in Season 4 and he’ll play an important role. He’s meant to be a “remix” of an unnamed comic book character. More on him in a minute.
In the comics, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company meet Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene at Hershel’s farm, after the final prison battle. The trio are looking for supplies to take with them on their journey to Washington, D.C., since Eugene said he was a scientist with the answer to how the zombie outbreak started and he wanted to connect with fellow government types/people in charge. Rick’s group decides to head to D.C. with them.
Comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman said the trio’s introduction to the show would be “somewhat similar” to how they arrived in the comics, but he made a point of telling SFX Rosita would have a “somewhat different” intro. “As we get deeper into Season 4 you start to see some hints as to what we’re doing and why we’re bringing her in,” he added. Overall, he said the trio will be “very interesting and dynamic and explosive characters that will be breathing some new life into the show.”
In case this influences your vote, Josh’s Eugene will sport a mullet and Michael’s Abraham has a classic red stache. We’re not sure how Christian’s Rosita will look but she’s a stunner, so we’re guessing she’ll look good.
Back to Gareth. He’s more mysterious, since there is no Gareth in the comics. However, there’s some speculation that he could possibly be connected to The Hunters, a group of cannibal survivors Rick and company meet on the road to D.C. Maybe Gareth is a version of Chris, leader of The Hunters?
We’re also expecting to see Morgan Jones (Lennie James) again later this season. Showrunner Scott Gimple said he would return, although we don’t know the details. Morgan is not a new character, of course, but he’s only been featured in two episodes (Season 1, Episode 1 and Season 3, Episode 12), so he is kind of new. Heck, Meghan may have had more screen time!
(Update: OK, maybe Morgan won't return. Scott told Entertainment Weekly he was misquoted about Morgan; the original news came out of Comic Con, but maybe Scott was just saying Morgan would return eventually, not specifically this season? At this point, IMDb still has Lennie credited for Season 4’s Episode 16, but take that with a grain of salt.)
At any rate, there may be more new characters coming other than Abraham, Rosita, Eugene, and Gareth, but they are the ones who’ve gotten official attention. Which one are you most looking forward to seeing in action, and are you curious about what’s up with Morgan’s latest return?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
