Did you miss Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) last week — and in the two months before that? Don’t worry, he’s back on The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 10, “Inmates.”
The February 16 episode will follow Daryl and Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), who left the prison together, in one of four different storylines. There should be a lot going on for several former Team Prison characters, so this may not be the “magnificent” Daryl-centric episode of lore. But Dixon domination is on the way.
"There is a bit of focus on Daryl coming up,” Norman recently told Digital Spy. “We really get into some personalized storytelling in the back eight. The back eight is some of the strongest stuff we've ever done and I can't wait for you guys to see it. Andy will call me in the middle of the night and bark into my trailer, 'Have you read the latest episode?' We love it." How do we get on the list of people Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) calls in the middle of the night?
Everyone keeps talking up the great writing in the second half, but any time there’s discussion about Daryl, it inevitably circles back to the fear that he may not survive. If Daryl dies, fans riot — this is known. But for every fan who worries that a Daryl might die, there’s another fan who insists the show would never dare kill off their hugely popular cash cow. Is Daryl truly untouchable?
"I don't like to hear that at all,” Norman told revealed “I don't want to dare anybody, do you know what I'm saying? I'm happy that people really love my character, but they have flat out said that nobody is untouchable, even Rick. Let's just knock on wood and keep our fingers crossed."
Yeah, executive producer/comic book writer Robert Kirkman has threatened Rick’s life and he’s also said he feels like Daryl’s passionate fans are daring him to kill off the dashing Dixon. If anyone notices RK buying more life insurance or heading into Witness Protection, that could be a clue that Daryl is being killed off. Until then, it’s just talk. (Point to ponder: Which character do you think the show would kill off first, Rick or Daryl?)
We’re looking forward to the Daryl/Beth dynamic in the second half, but we’re still wondering if Daryl will ever reconnect with another leading lady, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). No spoilers on that from Norman, but he did talk about why he thinks Daryl and Carol have a special bond. "I think those two characters are similar in so many ways and it's a case of damaged people gravitating towards damaged people." He said he loves working with Melissa and got lucky to have so many scenes with her in the past. “You can take two actors and make them work together, but if they don't gel personally, I don't think you'll have that magic.”
Daryl seems to have chemistry with everyone, but there is something special about his connection to Carol. We’ll have to see if there’s even time for those two characters to work their damaged magic in the second half. In the meantime, get more details on this Sunday’s Episode 10.
The Walking Dead Season 4 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
