We like to think that after watching nearly four seasons of The Walking Dead we’ve gotten pretty good at spotting little hints of what’s to come or nods to things from past episodes, but in last Sunday’s Episode 14: “The Grove,” we missed a really interesting and important nod to a dearly departed character.
Throughout the hour, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), Tyreese (Chad Coleman), Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino), and Mika Samuels (Kyla Kenedy) spent time in the house working on a puzzle, just like a normal pre-apocalyptic family might do. We didn’t pay any attention to the subject of the puzzle, but clearly we should have!
On Talking Dead Melissa revealed that the puzzle was a picture of Carol’s daughter, Sophia. In a post-episode interview with Entertainment Weekly she spoke more about the puzzle, noting that it’s subject was even a surprise to the cast.
“We had no idea until we were shooting that confession scene. We had no idea what the puzzle was and we were trying to take little guesses and they would get certain portions of it together in between shoots when they would work on it. And then props would come along and mess it all up again to keep the continuity going, so the puzzle was never really getting anywhere as far as being completed,” she revealed. “And then [director] Mike [Satrazemis] came out and said, ‘By the way, you know the puzzle on the table here, when you complete it, it looks like this.’ And then he showed the picture of Sophia on the box of the puzzle. And it just took my breath away, to think this whole time that Sophia had been right there with us. It was kind of interesting. It’s just one of those little things directors will do. It was really cool.”
Whoa, we totally missed that meta moment. And even though it’s kind of creepy and nonsensical (why would there be a puzzle of Sophia in this random house?) Carol’s daughter certainly played a major part in Episode 14, even if she was never on camera.
Carol warned Mika about becoming too much like her daugher, and after Mika’s brutal death she lamented that, like Sophia, Mika didn’t have a bad bone in her body. And last but not least, when Carol mourned Mika (and even Lizzie) it was like her daughter had died all over again. Needless to say, Sophia’s presence was certainly felt in “The Grove.”
Did you know that the puzzle was a picture of Sophia, or did we just blow your minds? Tell us your reaction below!
