The Walking Dead Season 4 already has a big cast of characters, but we have to make room for a few more — and also revise our expectations for what they might be doing here.
Three potentially major characters from the comic books should be arriving soon (maybe in Episode 10, although that was never confirmed): Sgt. Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), and Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt).
TWD is loosely based on the comic books written by executive producer Robert Kirkman; in the books, Rosita, Eugene, and Abraham cross paths with Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) group at the Greene family farm, after The Governor’s (David Morrissey) big final attack on the prison. Rick and company hit the road with the newbies to try and reach Washington, D.C.
Showrunner Scott Gimple previously told The Hollywood Reporter, "We're going to tell a version of the Eugene, Abraham, and Rosita comic stories, that's what we do.” Robert Kirkman previously told Entertainment Weekly, “I can say that their introduction will be somewhat similar to how they were introduced in the comic, which I think is a very cool thing.”
Did you note that “somewhat”? Kirkman talked to SFX in early January, and it sounds like Rosita may be getting a new storyline. “We’re introducing her into the show in a somewhat different way than in the comics. As we get deeper into Season 4 you start to see some hints as to what we’re doing and why we’re bringing her in.”
Hmm. Any ideas? In the comics, Rosita and Abraham have a romantic relationship, so maybe that doesn’t happen on screen. We’ll have to see. Do you think she’ll end up paired with one of the other guys on the show, or will her storyline go in a non-romantic direction? Do you think she’ll be connected in some way to Bob Stookey, since now we’re wondering what his whole mystery is about? It would be nice for Rosita to be given a more meaty, independent role ... but not if it’s at the expense of any of our core Atlanta/farm group. Sorry, but they take priority.
Whatever happens with this trio, expect them to stick around for a while. As Robert told EW back in December, “I think the main thing to look at is that these are some very interesting and dynamic and explosive characters that will be breathing some new life into the show [...] So they will definitely be an X factor that changes the dynamic of the show quite a bit. There’s cool things ahead with them.”
Let’s just get to it already! Are you curious about Rosita’s storyline? Worried about what they might do and how it will affect our core group?
The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
