Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Speculation: Emily’s New Love Interest?

As of this week’s episode, Pretty Little LiarsEmily (Shay Mitchell) and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) were going strong, making hopeful plans for their dream future together at Stanford. But no relationship is without peril on this show and recent spoilers inform us that Season 4 will see Paige face competition for Emily's affection. We ask: who else will be making a bid for fair Em’s heart?

It may seem far-fetched to imagine that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) has a thing for any of the Liars, but we thought the same thing about Toby once, and look at him now: lovestruck! There was definitely some chemistry between these two when Jenna first moved to town. In Season 2’s Halloween flashback ep, we saw Emily checking out Jenna in her Lady Gaga costume. A lot has happened since then, and Jenna has engaged in some terrible behavior, but we like to think people can change. Jenna seemed both genuinely scared and genuinely contrite when she showed up at Emily’s house in the Season 4 premiere to ask Em to apologize to Toby for her if anything should happen. Could there be a romantic future for these two?

We loved Maya (Bianca Lawson), but it is painful to dwell on the relationship between Emily and Maya with the latter party dead. However, showrunner Marlene King has given us hope! She recently said of the chances for Maya’s return: "I know fans are still hoping for that. Anything is possible in Rosewood." Out of all of the potentials on the list, Maya is the only one we can see as a real rival for Paige in Emily’s affections. Emily didn’t fall out of love with Maya, Maya was taken from her in the most horrific way possible. If Maya somehow showed up in Rosewood alive, we’re not sure which ship Paily or Emaya we’d be rooting for ... or who Emily would chose!

Shana (Aeriel Miranda) was a total jerk in Season 4, Episode 2: “Turn of the Shoe,” but under the same “people can change/are not always what they seem” principle we used with Jenna, we’re not ruling out the possibility of a romantic attachment developing between these two gorgeous gals. It could have just been a “B” Team play to get close to the Liars, but Shana seemed totally interested in Emily last season, and we think at least part of that interest was authentic after all, Emily and Shana have a lot in common. Well, swimming. But that’s a big part of both girls' lives, and that’s totally what Emily and Paige bonded over. Stranger things have happened in Rosewood!

Before there was Maya, there was Alison. Emily was clearly smitten with her mean girl BFF back in the day, and while we like to think she's now strong enough to not get caught up in Ali's web of manipulation and lies again, if Ali really is alive there's no telling what kind of confused feelings that might drag up for Emily. This option would certainly be interesting to watch play out.

We’ve always been Team Hannily when it comes to friendship — these BFFs stay over one another’s houses when their respective mothers are out-of-town, and have a dynamic that seems to work despite their different personalities — but what about romance? Sure, a romantic relationship would take a shift in Hanna’s sexual identity, but Ashley Benson recently tweeted Hannily shipper solidarity, so the idea isn’t totally out in left field. If opposites really do attract, then edgy tomboy Emily and consummate girly-girl Hanna are perfect for each other. Plus, they are both already in on “A,” so there’d be no need for all of those pesky early relationship lies of protection the Liars are always telling.

Who do you think will be fighting for Emily’s affection? Are there any prospects we missed? Do you think it will be someone new? Let us know in the comments below!
