We’re still not fully recovered from Season 3’s roller coaster ride of Spoby shipper-dom - when Toby’s (Keegan Allen) allegiance to the “A” Team was revealed, he seemingly died, and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) succumbed to a spiral of depression that landed her in Radley. Relatively, the Spoby relationship has enjoyed smooth sailing in Pretty Little Liars Season 4, but is that about to change? Are Spencer and Toby going to break up in Season 4B?!
We don’t mean to be unnecessarily alarmist, but things are not looking good for Spoby on the spoiler front. Earlier this week, we got this pic of Troian looking terrible (for her) on set. “I always think I look my best when Spencer looks her worst,” Troian tweeted along with the pic. Spencer’s depression might have nothing to do with her relationship with Toby, but we’ve only ever seen her look like this when dealing with his seeming betrayal and death last season. Just saying.
Yesterday, PLL writer Jonell Lennon added to our concern when she tweeted about Troian’s superb performance on set: “Wow @SleepintheGardn never disappoints. Beautiful performance today, girl,” Jonell shared. Now, she could be complimenting Troian on her riveting performance as happy, healthy Spencer, but - from our experience - these complimentary tweets usually accompany scenes of misery and heartbreak. (Exhibit A: when director Chad Lowe complemented Shay Mitchell and Lindsey Shaw on their performances in Season 4, Episode 9: “Into the Deep,” which ended up featuring their beautifully tragic talk at the end of the dock.)
Things between Spencer and Toby were left kind of up-in-the-air in the summer finale. Though Toby terminated his relationship with “A” because Spencer asked him to, we’re not sure if he won’t seek “A”’s help again when the search for the truth about his mother turns cold. There are some serious trust issues between these two since Toby’s betrAyal in Season 3. We can’t help but think that the right (or, more accurately, wrong) issue could push their relationship over the edge. Basically, eek!
Do you think Spoby will break up in Season 4B? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
