Ser Dontos is a character who has barely existed on Game of Thrones, much to the distress (or, in some cases, delight) of book fans. The tragicomic drunken knight made a brief appearance in the Season 2 premiere, when Sansa managed to talk Joffrey out of killing him. He was made the court fool instead, and was seen a few times throughout that season in the background.
Book fans expected Dontos to take on a larger role in Season 3, since he plays an important part in A Storm of Swords. Instead, he was nowhere to be seen; his role as someone offering escape for Sansa was filled by Littlefinger. Is he gone for good?
Apparently not. Back in April, showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff explained to The Hollywood Reporter that "we prefer to have our known characters and our brilliant actors who are with us all of the time taking over from some of the more minor characters," which is exactly what they did by having Littlefinger talk to Sansa about escape directly. That said, they also confirmed that we have not seen the last of Ser Dontos on the show.

Given that Dontos meets his maker in A Storm of Swords, we're guessing that means we'll see him in Season 4. The question is, will he just be a bit background player again, or will he end up taking on a more active role in Sansa's story?
Perhaps he will be the one who (as in the books) leads Sansa to Littlefinger's ship during the confusion after Joffrey's death. That would allow the show to keep in the scene where Littlefinger kills him in cold blood — a memorable moment that serves to emphasize exactly how dangerous Littlefinger can be.
