The Walking Dead Season 4 Spoilers: “Carol May Pop Up Before You Know It” — How Will Tyreese and Daryl React?

Part of the beauty of The Walking Dead — or at least the show’s Scott Gimple-run fourth season — is that many things that were teased in the first eight episodes will be addressed in the final eight. As creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman recently teased, viewers will be “shocked” by what they missed thus far.

Perhaps the biggest cliffhanger from Season 4A is what happened to Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) exiled her to suburbia way back in Episode 4 after she admitted to killing Karen and David, and she hasn’t been seen or heard from since. We know we’ll see her again eventually — we’ve already formulated some theories about her return — but how will her reappearance affect everyone else, specifically her “pookie” Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Tyreese, (Chad Coleman) who was dating Karen at the time of her death?

Robert spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how Daryl and Tyreese are affected by Carole’s exile and subsequent banishment (Tyreese still doesn’t know she killed Karen) and his response was interesting. “They certainly have bigger problems right now, but I love that that's a very intense pressure-cooker situation that could boil over at any moment,” he said. “Something was technically kept from Tyreese, whether it was intentional or just a byproduct of a series of unfortunate events. He was kept in the dark about that situation and how he finds about that, when he finds out about that, that's all up in the air. But we know that there are going to be consequences from that and hopefully viewers are watching each episode waiting for that shoe to drop. When it finally does, people are going to be pretty surprised by the outcome.”

Robert more or less confirmed that Tyreese and Carol will reunite and that he will find out the truth about her killer ways, which matches reports of people who said they saw Melissa and Tyreese filming with Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) and Mika Samuels (Kyla Kenedy) several months ago. If people will be “surprised” by the outcome then maybe Tyreese won’t flip out when he learns the truth? After Karen’s death we watched as he slowly unraveled, but maybe finding out exactly what happened to his lady love will help him make peace with the situation instead.

Rick did manage to tell Daryl that he expelled Carol because of her double murder, but before the last Dixon brother had a chance to react The Governor (David Morrissey) showed up with his tank. So how will Daryl process the news now that he’s separated from most of the group? Robert notes, “It's definitely going to be a big deal. It's something that's going to be weighing on him the entire time that he's out in the wilderness. We'll just have to see exactly how it affects him long-term and whether he can overcome the things he's faced with when we come back.”

And when exactly can we expect to see Carol? Since everyone is pretty much out on their own now that the prison has been destroyed, Robert points out that there’s a chance we could catch a glimpse of Carol sooner than expected. “Carol was exiled from the prison and has been out in the open, hopefully surviving, and now all of our characters who were in the prison have also, in a sense, been exiled from the prison and are out presumably in the same area,” he says. “So it's entirely possible that Carol may pop up before you know it.”

Are you eagerly anticipating Carol’s return?

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
