Game of Thrones Season 4 Spoilers: What Happens to Cersei Lannister?

With Season 3 of Game of Thrones a distant memory, it’s now time to turn our attention to what may lie ahead in Season 4. Since GoT is based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, we can make some good guesses about how the story will play out next season, at least in broad strokes. Here are our predictions about what's coming up for the woman we love to hate, Cersei Lannister, based on the latter half of A Storm of Swords.

Warning: This article contains MAJOR spoilers from the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Click away now if you don't want to know!

Disclaimer: Of course, the show may cut plot elements or even completely alter Cersei's story. These are spoilers based on the books only.

Cersei Loses a Son. And then there were two illegitimate Lannister children. At Joffrey’s wedding, Joff is poisoned and dies. Cersei is wildly grief-stricken, and she accuses Tyrion of being the culprit. Tyrion is locked up for the crime, and Cersei takes solace in the fact that she will finally be rid of her most-hated brother.

Cersei Loses a Brother. Jaime and Cersei manage to have one more roll in the incestuous hay after Joff’s death, but after that, Jaime begins to see what a horrible person Cersei is. Partly because of all the time Jaime spent with Brienne, a real stand-up gal, he suddenly realizes, “Wow, my sister is a huge bitch!” The two become increasingly hostile towards one another, with Cersei even going so far as to make fun of Jaime’s hand err, lack of hand.

Cersei Loses Another Brother. Jaime believes Tyrion to be innocent, so he frees him. When he does though, Tyrion informs him that Cersei has been sleeping around. After this, Cersei is really dead to Jaime, and he already wasn’t feeling it anymore. When news of Tyrion's escape reaches Cersei, she goes nuts. Largely because of what Tyrion does before he disappears...

Cersei Loses a Father. Lots of loss for Cersei next season (tears not really). Once Tyrion is freed by Jaime, he stops by his father’s room to say goodbye... and murders him. Cersei is crushed by the news, because she really depended on her father more than she would like to admit. However, she sees his death as an opportunity to show what she can do on her own.

Cersei Gains a Kingdom. Joffrey’s little brother Tommen is crowned king, but he’s only eight, so he can’t really be in charge. And with Tyrion, Tywin, and Joffrey all dead or missing, there is no one to stand between Cersei and her rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Except herself, because she’s terrible at it.

We think that’s where Season 4 will leave it, with Cersei realizing she’s now running the show. She has a lot to do in the fourth book, where she makes mistake after mistake in running the kingdom and begins to mistrust everyone around her, resulting in a spectacular downfall. Most of that will probably be in Season 5, but we may see some seeds for it planted in Season 4, and it’s going to be so sweet when those seeds bear fruit.
