Minor spoilers ahead from The Walking Dead comics.
First Rosita, then Abraham. Now Eugene has been cast for The Walking Dead Season 4. So ... are we leaving the prison for Washington, D.C. (or someplace close, like Alexandria)?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Retired at 35 star Josh McDermitt has landed the role of Dr. Eugene Porter, a series regular role on TWD. What that means depends on how closely the AMC show sticks to the original comic book source material.
In the comics, Rosita, Eugene and Abraham cross paths with our now Team Prison group, and they hit the road to try and reach Washington, D.C. because Eugene says he's a scientist who knows the cause of the zombie outbreak.
"We're going to tell a version of the Eugene, Abraham and Rosita comic stories, that's what we do," showrunner Scott Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that there will be differences between the comic and TV versions, as usual. However, here's one spoiler he's willing to share: Josh will sport a mullet as Eugene! Since the actor is also a comedian, we may also be seeing him as comic relief.
But we may not see him for a while, since there's a good amount of story to get through. "We're going to get to those characters in a bit but before that, we're going to be exploring a lot of different locations," Scott said. "We're at the prison the first two episodes. We start looking at other places in Episode 3 on but that isn't even tied with them yet."
Episode 3, "Isolation," may be when Tyreese, Michonne, Daryl and new character Bob Stookey take that drive they teased in the Comic-Con trailer, and we hear the radio message about a "sanctuary." That could be our gateway to strange new worlds beyond the prison.
Are you excited for Eugene and the potential new locations for TWD?
