Janie's got a gun, but The Governor’s (David Morrissey) got a tank. So he wins.
The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 7, “Dead Weight,” aired last Sunday, November 24 on AMC. MTV just shared a photo from the episode, with The Governor looking deep in thought next to a tank, which we now know belongs to Mitch, a former tank operator.
Seeing the tank there is a big hint to a potential storyline from the comic books written by executive producer Robert Kirkman.
In the books, The Gov. drives a tank through the prison fences in the big final battle with Team Prison. Showrunner Scott Gimple has said this season would be like a remix of the comics, so maybe The Gov. won’t do quite what he does in the comics. Still, before he gets tank happy in the books, he tries to negotiate with Team Prison. At that point, he has Tyreese (Chad Coleman) captive and he threatens to kill him if Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company don’t let him in. Tyreese doesn’t want Rick to allow access, and Rick refuses The Gov.’s demand. So The Gov. beheads Tyreese with Michonne’s katana. Then The Gov. and his Woodbury group crush the fences and commence a bloody battle, with many deaths on both sides.
Super morbid stuff, but we’ve been wondering if we should worry for Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson), Michonne (Danai Gurira) or Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), since they are all outside the prison at this point and ripe to be used in some fashion by The Gov. We saw The Gov. outside the prison in Episode 5, but David Morrissey has cautioned fans not to rush to judgment on why he’s there. We don’t know his plan yet.
When we saw that big hole in the prison fence in the Season 4 poster we thought maybe that was a hint to the tank scene. There were also spoilers about a tank being seen on set and a loud "boom." That still suggests an attack on the prison, possibly in the mid-season finale, Episode 8, which will air on December 1.
Even if the TV producers don’t want to mirror the comic book storyline, the tank has to be put to use in some way. It’s like Chekhov's gun — if you show it in the first act, you better fire it by the third.
Are you concerned about The Gov. and his new toy or are you just anxious to reunite with Team Prison?
