Game of Thrones Season 4 Spoilers: What Happens to the Mountain?
Game of Thrones Season 3 is a distant memory, so we're setting our sights on Season 4. Since GoT is based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF), we can make some good guesses about how the story will play out next season, at least in broad strokes. Here are our predictions about what's coming up for the recently recast brother of the Hound, the Mountain, based on the latter half of A Storm of Swords.

Cersei’s champion. During Tyrion’s trial for the murder of Joffrey, Tyrion learns that Cersei will choose none other than Gregor Clegane, the Mountain that Rides, as her champion should Tyrion choose a trial by combat. The Mountain is the biggest, baddest mother in all of Westeros, so Tyrion’s outlook looks pretty bleak — at least until the Red Viper volunteers to be his champion. Ol’ Red is looking to gain revenge against the Mountain for the murder of his sister and her children at the Mountain’s hands during Robert Baratheon’s rebellion seventeen years prior, and he sees this as his best opportunity to do so.
Fight! Fight! Fight! In what we’re anticipating to be the most thrilling fight the show has ever seen, the Mountain squares off against the Red Viper in a battle to the death, with Tyrion’s life hinging on the outcome. At first glance, one would think the Mountain would waste the Red Viper, since he’s about twice his size and covered head-to-toe in armor. Meanwhile, the Red Viper has hardly any armor, and is armed with only a small shield and a spear. However, anyone who knows the story of David and Goliath knows how this is going to turn out, right?
The Red Viper ends up being a very accomplished warrior, and he mops the floor with the Mountain, all the while trying to get him to confess to the murder of his sister and her family. The Mountain stays silent (other than yelling at him to shut up) and eventually falls, seemingly defeated. The Red Viper, instead of just finishing him off, lets his guard down trying to coax a confession out of the fallen Mountain, and the Mountain uses this opportunity to smash the Red Viper’s face in and kill him, while arrogantly giving his confession. Wait, that’s not how David and Goliath went at all. Damn it!
Poison’s a hell of a drug. So that spear that the Red Viper used in his fight with the Mountain? Turns out it was poisoned. Poisoned with a particularly nasty poison, in fact. One that slowly eats away at the Mountain, leaving him in excruciating agony for a long time while he lies dying with no hope for a cure. His screams echo throughout King’s Landing, which should make for an interesting dynamic to the background noise of the show should they decide to include it. His eventual death bears no credible witnesses though, leaving many to wonder if he is really dead...
