If there’s a silver lining to the destruction of the prison and the subsequent dispersion of our group of survivors, then it is that being out on the road again means various members of our crew will come in contact with new people. Let’s just hope they aren’t the kind of people who keep walker heads in jars and plot utter destruction.
Before The Walking Dead Season 4 even premiered back in October we knew that we were poised to meet at least three new characters this season. That trio consists of Sgt. Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) and Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt).
We haven’t met any of them yet (though rumor has it they will appear at the end of this Sunday’s Episode 10: “Inmates”) but we know that their television introduction will be pretty similar to how they were introduced in Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead comics. In the books, Rosita, Eugene, and Abraham cross paths with our group after The Governor’s (David Morrissey) final attack on the prison. Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) group hits the road with them to try and reach Washington, D.C. because Eugene says he's a scientist who knows the cause of the outbreak.
However, we recently learned of another character who we know very little about. This newbies’ name is Gareth and he’ll be played by actor Andrew J. West. When the character was announced we wondered if he would be a remix of some characters from the comics (since there is no specific Gareth) and it looks like we’re on the right track.
Before the second half of Season 4 debuted last week showrunner Scott Gimple was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross, who asked about Gareth. And although Scott didn’t reveal much of anything, he did confirm our “remix” theory. “I can say very little,” he began, noting that Gareth is “kind of from the books, kind of not totally from the books.”
“Comic fans would not know him. He was an invention that was inspired for the show,” Scott concluded.
