The Walking Dead Season 4 Spoilers: Expect “Another Turn” in Rick and Carl’s Relationship

The Walking Dead is all about the relationships between characters, and while we have our favorite romantic pairings that we follow very closely — Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) — there’s another duo that’s deserving of our attention as well. Yes, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) we’re talking about you two!

This Sunday’s midseason premiere is set to focus primarily on the father-son duo, with a little Michonne (Danai Gurira) thrown in, so TWD creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman told us a bit more about what we can expect from the pair now that they’re on their own and without Baby Judith following The Governor’s (David Morrissey) bloody massacre.

“The first episode back is a very intense pressure-cooker that is going to evolve their relationship a great deal and it's all contained in one episode,” Robert tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Coming out of that first episode, you're going to see Carl and Rick in very different places, and that progression is going to continue out through the back half of the season. By the end of the season, you're going to see yet another turn in their relationship. There's quite a bit going on between these two characters, and while we're going to be focusing on all of the characters as we move into the back half of the season, you're going to see a lot of changes in Rick and Carl especially.”

Remember, as Season 4 began Rick was gardening and listening to his iPod, and he took away Carl’s gun and encouraged him to go to “storytime,” but in the aftermath of Hershel Greene’s (Scott Wilson) death things have obviously changed. The Governor destroyed everything safe that our group built, and he nearly killed Rick, but perhaps the biggest change for the Grimes men is that they think Baby Judith is dead, having come across her bloody car seat before fleeing the prison for good.

Viewers can expect a resolution to the Baby Judith storyline at some point, but Robert wouldn’t commit to exactly when that’s going to happen. “It will be resolved with absolute certainty but it's an unknown that's out there. Revealing when it will be resolved would be somewhat of a spoiler. There will be answers, but I don't know if they're going to come necessarily soon.”

And seeing as how Carl could blame his dad for the war (the younger Grimes wanted to shoot The Gov. from the start) Judith’s death (which already occurred, as far as they’re concerned) might just change Rick and Carl’s dynamic forever. “As it stands right now Rick and Carl are on their own and they have every reason to believe that she is in fact dead. So that's something that's going to be weighing on them and is going to put them in a very dire situation and really heighten the events that are surrounding them and put them in a bad place moving forward,” Robert explains.

What “turns” are you expecting to see in Rick and Carl’s relationship: Will Carl usurp control or will Rick reign supreme?

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns with Episode 9 on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
