Almost one month to the day before the premiere of The Walking Dead Season 4, AMC kindly shared a four-minute teaser video, combining new footage with behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and producers.
Showrunner Scott Gimple said time jump between Season 3 and Season 4 is "about six or seven months," and the prison has become a more stable place. However, we see the fence is starting to give, thanks to hungry walkers, and safety begins to fall apart. They talk more about the new threat, reiterating that it's not walkers or other people. You can't put your finger on where it's going to come next, and it's coming from inside.
According to producer/special effects guru Greg Nicotero, the season "really is all about one thing: 'What would you be willing to do, and can you come back from the things that you've done to survive?" Comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman said, "We wanted every character to be pushed to their breaking point ... This is The Walking Dead, things are only going to get worse. Just wait." Lovely! On that same happy note, Scott added, "There might not be any hope."
Nice. At least Hershel is still an optimist seeing the positive out there (he’ll probably die for that), and Carol seems to be Team Prison's resident teacher, leading her knife class and possibly helping with the "storytime" a little girl talks about. Melissa McBride (Carol) said what's great about Season 4 is how intimate and important all the stories are within each little group.
Speaking of intimacy, early in the video it looks like Tyreese gets cozy with a special lady friend. Is that Karen, who also came over from Woodbury and will be a more major character this season? At one point, we see Tyreese go outside holding flowers, and he looks shocked. When we saw the full extended trailer, we thought that scene might mean Ty’s sister Sasha had died and he was discovering her body. But what if he finds the body of his girlfriend? (Or both ladies?) That could also send him on a rage spiral, leading him to bash a herd of zombies in that car scene.
What stood out to you in the new preview video? Feel enlightened in any way?
The Walking Dead Season 4 premieres Sunday, October 13 on AMC.
