Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Summer Finale Recap: “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t”

What the whaaaaat?!? In this week’s jaw-dropping Pretty Little Liars Season 4 summer finale (Season 4, Episode 12: “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t”), CeCe keeps slipping out of the Liars’ grasp, Ali is really good at holding her breath, and Aria’s love life just got a wee bit more complicated.

Wherein Aria Locks Lips with the Enemy

Okay, so seeing Ezra in A's lair is the reason why we’ve been constantly pulling out our hairs since the episode ended. Seriously, now there’s just a pile of hair in front of us, and it’s really gross. But Aria did have some badass moments this week, particularly when she karate-kicked CeCe in the sawmill, not unlike Jackie Chan or, uh, Miss Piggy. (“Hiyyyaaa!”) Whatever Aria spent on those martial arts lessons, it was worth it.

And yes, Aria kissed Ezra — which we thought was completely awesome, until we saw Ezra in A’s lair, and we realized it was completely not awesome. But is Ezra really “A”? Like, really? Or was he just trying to find Aria? We know, we know — we sound like extremely naive Ezria fanatics. Guilty as charged.

Wherein Spencer Finally Snuggles with Toby Again

Are we happy that the endless long-running Toby’s-mom mystery still hasn’t been resolved and is getting dragged into another season? To paraphrase the Magic 8 Ball, all signs point to us not being happy about it. But we love Toby-getting-teary scenes, so we’ll let it slide. Plus, we hadn’t gotten a good Spoby cuddle in a long, long while, so we’re appreciative of that gift as well. But since when is Spencer so obsessed with magic?

But what is going on with Melissa and Wren — and how is Shana involved? Plus, why did Shana not notice the paper that slipped out of her folder and basically smacked against her leg about a dozen times before hitting the ground? This girl is terrible at detecting fallen paper.

Wherein Emily Gets to Spend Some Quality Alone Time

Typically, Emily is the type to enjoy spending some time with her thoughts in the dark, but we doubt she was getting much thinking done while trapped in that box on the sawmill assembly line. But if Emily had in fact turned into two Emilys on account of that buzz saw, at least she would have gotten to spend her last few nights having cute moments in Paige’s bed. How adorable was that scene where they were both wearing vests in Paige’s room? Don’t underestimate the power of the vest.

Wherein Hanna and Her Mom Celebrate — For About a Minute or Two

We were convinced that the adorable-but-mysterious Travis would end up screwing Hanna’s mom over, but instead he describes CeCe as the woman he saw fleeing Wilden’s murder scene. But did CeCe really kill Wilden or did “A” tell Travis to do that? Either way, Travis is so cute that he could say that our mothers killed Wilden, and we wouldn’t really get mad at him.

And we can't ignore the fact that we cannot imagine a PLL without Caleb in it. Get your cute little butt off that bus, Caleb!!!

First, we have four words to describe the episode: Best. PLL finale. Ever! And while we’re inclined to assume that Ezra is "A" (how could you do this to us, Ez?), we have to take a breath and remember that this is quite similar to the Season 3 summer finale. Remember how we all were convinced Toby was “A,” until it turned out to be a red herring? But would the show really do that to us again?

So is Ezra really “A”? Well, the fact that he was in A’s lair is not a good sign. (Easy on that closet door, Ezra! Closet doors aren’t cheap.) He certainly has money to afford being “A,” with his family’s wealth. And Aria has been the least harmed of the Liars, since Ezra needed her. But then why wasn’t Ezra wearing a hoodie? And we didn’t think he knew Alison — but maybe he is in fact obsessed with her and was the Beach Hottie. Ughhh.

It does make sense that Ezra would be a logical candidate for “A,” since he is an English teacher and poet, so he would be able to easily write A’s little riddles. And remember when Aria said in Season 1, “A saved my relationship”? Hmm. Plus, we have to point out the fact that we spotted a mug in Ezra's apartment last week with the letter “A” on it. Foreshadowing, anyone?

The other shocker of the night is that Alison is apparently alive, as Ms. Grunwald claims to have pulled her out of the dirt and driven her to the hospital. We still don’t know whose body was found — so maybe it was Ali’s twin, and the show is indeed going the twin route? Twin theorists unite!

— Speaking of Ali possibly being alive, did you notice someone's eyeball watching the Liars through the wall of the lair? We're thinking this is Ali's eyeball. And while we're talking out-there theories, does this episode suggest that Aria just might be on the "A" team now, if she's working with Ezra? After all, her Magic-8 Ball did have nothing but the letter "A" in it. Hmmm...

Where did CeCe go after she fell? And is CeCe actually on the Liars’ team? We like the idea that she is protecting the Liars as Red Coat — which would explain why “A” would want CeCe to be identified as Wilden’s killer. So is Ali indeed the other Red Coat?

Other Things To Be Discussed:

We like how the Liars were offered a croissant during the French club meeting, since we can picture “A” yelling, “Hurry up with my damn croissants!” Come to think of it, maybe Kanye West is “A”? ("I'ma let you finish, but I'm the best stalker of all time.")

— We were big fans of Spencer's top with the colorful keys all over it. Speaking of keys, if only the Liars finding Wilden's key this season would have paid off more. In fact, why do we still have so many questions about everything? Deep breaths, deep breaths...
