It’s no secret that Game of Thrones the show is quickly catching up with Game of Thrones the book series. Author George R.R. Martin has admitted as much himself, telling Vanity Fair in its new cover profile of the show, “They are [catching up]. Yes. It’s alarming.”
That said, however, we still have plenty of ground to cover before we’re in the neighborhood of the next scheduled A Song of Ice and Fire book, The Winds of Winter, let alone the final installment, A Dream of Spring.
The Season 4 synopsis, which comes to us courtesy of that same, extremely helpful Vanity Fair article (via Blastr), spills some major spoilers on what to expect when the new season begins Sunday, April 6. We’ve gone through line by line and here are the major bits to watch out for:
The Lannisters are in trouble. Despite the lion’s triumph at the Red Wedding, the current reigning family of Westeros might not hold onto the Iron Throne for much longer and they’ll have no one to blame for themselves. “Can they survive their own egos,” the synopsis asks, “as well as new and ongoing threats from the south, north, and east?” Well, can they?!
Danger from the south. Speaking of the south, expect to see a new character: Oberyn Martell, aka the Red Viper of Dorne, who “arrives at King’s Landing to attend Joffrey's wedding to Margaery Tyrell, and perhaps act on an ulterior agenda.”
Winter arrives on two fronts. The Night’s Watch, seriously undermanned after last season, faces both Mance Rayder’s wildling army and “an even more formidable foe: the undead White Walkers.” Poor Jon.
Where are those dragons? Daenerys Targaryen continues her quest to reclaim the Iron Throne. Next stop: Meereen, the largest city in Slaver’s Bay, which, the synopsis hints, “could ultimately provide her with enough ships to sail to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.”
What do you make of the synopsis? Surprised they gave away so much detail, or were you hoping for even more spoilers? Hit the comments!
