The Walking Dead Season 4: Who Is Abraham?

Sgt. Abraham Ford, and what might his appearance mean for other characters on The Walking Dead Season 4?

Comic book spoilers ahead!

Abraham is a pretty big character in the comic books written by TV show executive producer Robert Kirkman. The AMC show has strayed far from the books, and added characters like Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) who don’t even exist in the source material, but new showrunner Scott Gimple is a fan of the comic books and he said TWD will be telling a version of Abraham’s group’s story this season.

In the comics, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and the prison survivors meet Abraham and his fellow travelers Rosita Espinosa, (Christian Serratos) and Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) back on Hershel’s farm after The Governor’s (David Morrissey) final attack of the prison. They are on their way to Washington, D.C. because Eugene says he’s a scientist who knows the cause of the walker/zombie/biter outbreak. Spoiler alert: He’s full of crap. It doesn’t make him a “villain,” and he doesn’t even leave the group, but Eugene is lying. Still, the group ends up close to D.C. at the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Alexandria, Virginia, as well as surrounding communities.

Rick and Abraham become good friends, but like most guys who befriend Rick, the road starts out pretty rocky. In the comics, Rick and Abraham fight over Abraham trying to kill Maggie, when Maggie attempts suicide. We hope this isn't like anything that could happen on the TV show, but she survives anyway.

Abraham ends up bonding with Rick when he goes with Rick and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) on a trip back to Rick's hometown. Some bandits try to rape Carl, and Abraham helps to fight them off. They meet up with Morgan and reconnect with the group on the road to D.C.

Eventually — after dealing with The Hunters, then a bunch of other stuff in the Safe-Zone area — Abraham is killed by a guy named Dwight, who is a member of The Saviors, a group run by Negan, a villain we're expecting to meet at some point on TV, but no time too soon. But the comic and TV deaths have been very different so far. Andrea is actually still alive and kicking in the comic book series.

Here's something to worry about, though: In the comics, Shane starts out as Rick's BFF, and when he dies, Tyreese (Chad Coleman) takes his place. Tyreese dies in the comics when he's beheaded by The Governor (David Morrissey) himself. Abraham steps in as Rick's new BFF. Right now, we consider Daryl to be Rick's BFF (for however long that lasts with all this Carol business) so if Tyreese and Abraham are also added to the mix, the relationships have to change in some way. Rick can't have three BFFs!

The comic book Abraham is a tough, former U.S. Army sergeant in his late 40s with red hair, a really great mustache, and an ex-wife and two kids who are all dead. The actor playing him on TV, Southland alum Michael Cudlitz, is 48, and a promo photo shows him holding a gun while sporting the appropriate hair.

Expect him to be “vulgar with rough edges but wise.” That’s how they described the character in a casting call over the summer and it’s a pretty good fit for Abraham. And Daryl. And Tyreese when he’s mad. And maybe Michonne too. Anyway, here's more on what we can expect from Abraham, Rosita and Eugene.
