The Governor (David Morrissey) was never really a “good” guy on The Walking Dead Season 3, but he seriously broke bad after the death of his (zombie) daughter Penny.
So it would make sense for the new Governor — “Brian” — to snap again if something happened to his new Penny, young Meghan Chambler (Meyrick Murphy).
On Season 4, Episode 6, “Brian” teamed up with Lilly (Audrey Marie Anderson), her daughter Meghan, and Lilly’s sister Tara (Alanna Masterson). When Meghan was nearly bit by a walker outside while playing tag in Episode 7: "Dead Weight", The Gov. decided he needed to take the prison for her safety and the safety of everyone else in his group.
David Morrissey talked to the L.A. Times about the Gov.’s transformation. The Times said Brian/Gov. appears to have the chance to be a father figure once again, although they feared it might not pan out so well. “I don’t know about that,” David said. “It depends on what pan out means. I think there’s a sense of that his duty is to protect those people. That’s what he thinks, his duty to make sure that these two women and the girl get to safety. We’ll have to wait to see how he achieves that or if he achieves that.”
The women seem to trust him completely, but the audience knows he has this Jekyll/Hyde nature.
“There’s a bit of a secret going on between him and the audience, which is about his internal struggle,” David said. “I think when he kills the old man with the oxygen tank, there’s a glimmer that he’s enjoying that too much. There’s a bit at the end of Episode 6 where he attacks the zombies and he fights in such a visceral way. You know that this man is used to fighting. Those things are slightly worrying for the audience, I would hope. Then at the end, he meets Martinez, and that’s literally his past catching up with him. What’s he going to do now? How’s he going to still be Brian when there’s a man standing there who knows everything about the Governor?”
It’s possible Brian will prevail and he’ll stay the “good guy” and protect his new friends — even if it’s from Martinez and this new group. But we saw The Gov. standing outside the prison in Episode 5, so what would bring him back there? Why does he want the prison again?
That’s our curiosity right now — and if The Gov. snaps again, we have to imagine it’s related to something happening to Meghan, or some desperate attempt to save her. Maybe he feels like he has to take the prison to protect Meghan and her family?
Do you think Meghan will live long on Season 4, or will her death serve to turn Brian back into the Gov.? Vote below!
