The Vampire Diaries Season 5: 3 Things We Want For Matt

Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), how we adore your blue eyes, boundless loyalty, and skill at staying human in a town increasingly supernatural. We could compose a whole sonnet on the considerable qualities of Matt Donovan, but instead, we’ll focus our energies into something more useful: what we want to see for our favorite quarterback busboy in Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries.

A little consideration

Seriously, how does one cash in one’s karma points in Mystic Falls? Because Matt has built up about a million friend points helping out Elena and Co. over the seasons and, as far as we can tell, the fang gangers have done relatively little to help Matt out in return. Let’s recap: Matt is a family-less busboy with seemingly no life savings and no career prospects. Sure, on the grand scheme of TVD problems, they’re not major, but most of Matt’s friends have an entire eternity to enjoy the pleasures of life. Matt only have another 60 or so years. Maybe Elena and Caroline could use their considerable compulsion powers to get Matt into a nice college or, you know, a nice furniture set. The man’s only literally bled for them!

A love interest

Poor Matt. His character started this show as Elena’s ex-boyfriend who kind of thought they were on a break, when really they were for-real broken up. Since then, his romantic prospects haven’t really improved. He totally had something good going with Caroline before he found out she was a vampire and freaked out. He did spend the entire summer gallivanting around Europe with Rebekah, which would sound like a sign of better romantic things to come, but as she’s headed off to The Originals, Matt is back to singledom. What’s a nice, good-looking, human guy gotta do to get a date in Mystic Falls?

Jeremy and Matt: BFFs For life

One of the pleasantly surprising developments on TVD has been the friendship between Jeremy and Matt. Though they’ve known one another since they were little, they didn’t really become friends until Season 3. Before that, they were connected by the shared loved ones in their lives (namely, Elena and Vicki), but didn’t have much of a relationship of their own. By Season 4, they are seemingly doing everything together. When Jeremy starts to have compulsions to kill Elena, Matt moves into the Gilbert House to keep an eye on him. Later, the two live at the Gilbert lake house together while Jeremy trains to be a vampire hunter. Though Elena’s reaction to Jeremy’s death in Season 4 was the gutting, Matt’s quiet heartbreak at his best friend’s death may have been the saddest. Now that Jeremy is back in the land of the living and the two are both in Mystic Falls, we hope to get lots of BFF bonding time!
