The Walking Dead Season 5: If Carl Grimes Dies, What Will Chandler Riggs Do? He Says…

The character of Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) seems about as safe as a character can get. Not because he has Daryl Dixon-like status, but because in a of of ways The Walking Dead is his story, not Rick’s. Robert Kirkman even said he considered killing Rick instead of Shane in the comics, having the story follow Carl growing up with the guy who killed his father.

There’s a lot of comic book story ahead for Carl, but we know the TV show is a remix and does not follow the source material that closely. The Powers That Be also like to tell us No One Is Safe, even if No One Believes It. Besides, you can do whatever you what with comic book characters, but actors are human. And you never know when a human actor might decide it’s time to move on.

That’s not to suggest that Chandler Riggs is done playing Carl, but it wouldn’t be the end of his world. Chandler has grown up on the TWD set, and he recently turned 15. Back in May, he talked (maybe joked) about crying if Carl died, but his most recent response is more philosophical.

Just a few days ago, on, Chandler was asked "have you ever thought that they we're gonna kill carl?" He admitted, "the the thought has crossed my mind too many times." Shortly afterward, a fan asked, "What would you do if your character died ? And personally I think Carls character development is amazing." Chandler said, "i would live a normal life lol."

Hopefully Carl won't go anytime soon. (We’re just starting to like him, thanks to his friendship with Michonne.) Chandler did say, on the same day as the other Qs, that he was filming in Georgia at the moment, which implies Carl was still seeing some action as they finished Episode 7 and went into the midseason finale. But we'll have to wait to see for ourselves. (He also said he didn’t think the Comic-Con trailer spoiled much at all, so we should have plenty of surprises ahead.)

In April, Robert Kirkman told TV Guide that Carl could be tested in big ways in Season 5. "There's a lot of changes left for that kid to go through." A lot! We’re not really worried that this is the end for him, but at least Chandler has a mature perspective on what will happen if Carl ever does die — not like that one guy with his threats to riot. (Kidding!)

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
