Vampire Diaries Season 5: Will the Cure Have Side Effects?

You know those drugs whose side effects are sometimes worse than the disease they’re curing? “You no longer have allergies, but your eyeballs may fall out of your face if you sneeze too hard.” That kind of thing. Well, it got us wondering about Katherine (Nina Dobrev) on The Vampire Diaries.

At the end of Season 4, the 500-year-old vampire was turned into a human when Elena (Nina Dobrev) forced her doppelganger to take the cure. So what will become of her in Season 5, now that she’s lost her vamp speed, healing, and — perhaps most important — compulsion?

Apparently Kat isn’t so good at making friends the old-fashioned way. She had to compel an entire town in Pennsylvania to like her... otherwise they probably would’ve quickly realized she can be quite bitchy. She’ll have straighten up her act; learn how to avoid bumps, bruises, and more serious injuries; and stop expecting to be able to down four or five bourbons in a row. (That vampire tolerance is also finito.)

But all that is to be expected. There could also be some unexpected consequences. Quite a few theories are floating around the TVD message boards, including one that Katherine could have all her memories of being a vampire erased. She’d wake up thinking she was still in 15th century Bulgaria.

Frankly, that would be totally interesting to watch. Of course, we’ve seen some Original family members adjust seamlessly into society after being dead for a century or eight, but this would be different. Before becoming a vampire, Katherine was a different, well, person. It’d be like hitting the reset button on her whole life. Then again, Kat might be wicked right down to her core.

Unfortunately, we have a feeling the show won’t go down this route. From what executive producer Julie Plec has said, it sounds like Katherine is in full possession of her faculties and more than a little angry at her doppelganger.

But hey, there’s always a chance the cure could have some other unintended consequences... Maybe she’ll start eating whole sticks of butter in her sleep?
