The Walking Dead Season 5: “New and Different and Crazy and Exciting Things”

It’s that time of year again — time for more vague teases from The Powers That Be about the upcoming season of The Walking Dead!

Season 5 started filming on May 5, and comic book writer/TV exec producer Robert Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly they’re “making another magical season,” with everyone bring their A-game. (Perfect for the Terminus “A” car!)

RK added, “We’re doing new and different and crazy and exciting things and now I think the atmosphere is that we can’t wait until we can start sharing things with people and start showing things to people because we’re really excited about what we’re doing here.” So start sharing!

He said they’ve been extra secretive on set this year because any images that get out can spoil the big cliffhanger. They haven’t been 100 percent successful at keeping intel on a lockdown, but we’re grateful for that, since we love a good tease. Give us just enough information to speculate with, and it’s a perfect bone to gnaw for the next five months.

Kirkman added that TWD works best in cycles of ramping up and ramping down the action. Season 4 started on a down cycle, with the Farmer Rick stuff, but Season 5 will definitely start on an “up cycle.” He added that they’re “gonna kind of hit the ground running this season.”

Showrunner Scott Gimple previously said the first half of Season 5 would be more action-heavy than the past eight episodes, with big twists.

So far we’ve been hearing a lot of whispers about action being filmed at Terminus — explosions, charred bodies, and even Carol checking out the place by the fence — and the first official photo showed Rick Grimes peeking out of a train car. Is Beth Greene there yet? Will she be showing up soon? How will Rick and company get free of Terminus? Will Carol and Tyreese be able to help or not? These are the real cliffhangers, and we’ll have to wait to see what new, different, crazy and exciting storytelling devices they use in the next chapter.

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
