We have to admit, this has the trappings for a pretty epic love story. Silas and the original Petrova doppelganger loved one another so much that their doppelganger descendants can’t help but fall in love. This is why Stefan and Elena were drawn to one another. This is why they have some kind of psychic connection that is causing Elena to dream about Stefan. This is why they are destined to be together. Sounds reasonable, right?
No, just because they’re doppelganger doesn’t mean they’re destined
Of course, Elena isn’t the only Petrova doppelganger hanging around town. Katherine is also a Petrova doppelganger and though Stefan did, in fact fall in love with her once, he isn’t in love with her now. If the doppelganger equals true love theory were correct, then why wouldn’t Stefan and Katherine be continuing their epic romance? And why did Elena fall in love with Damon? We think all this doppelganger nonsense could just be a red herring.
Yes, but not because they’re doppelgangers
Of course, who says that Stefan and Elena’s connection has anything to do with their status as doppelgangers? Their love for one another could be completely unrelated, and their relationship endgame for the show. We fell in love with this show watching Elena and Stefan fall in love and — as much as we love Delena — there will always be a piece of us that is waiting (and hoping) for Stelena to get back together… regardless of their doppelganger histories.
Elena was in love with Stefan when she was human, but as a vampire, she loves Damon. Was this just a coincidence, or is there more to it than that? We know that doppelganger blood has power when its host is human, but loses its magical properties if the doppelganger is turned into a vamp. Could other Petrova doppelganger properties also only have power when the doppelganger is human, i.e. their love for Silas’ doppelgangers? If so, will human-again Katherine be seriously falling for Stefan? Or even Silas?
