Downton Abbey Season 5 Spoiler: Episode 1 Reveals Sad Secret! Is It About Baxter?

Update: Want to know what’s actually happening in Season 5? Read our full episode recaps! They’re live as of the U.K. September 21 premiere.

We’re just days away from the beginning of Downton Abbey Season 5 (well, in the U.K. at least). September 21 marks the start of the next round of Downton and you know what that means: Spoilers!

Earlier this year, Allen Leech, who plays lovable Irishman Tom Branson, chatted about what’s in store for Season 5, and he threw out one crumb that we figured was worth reviewing after seeing the official Season 5 trailer.

When we heard from Allen at the end of January, he said he’d just received scripts for Episode 1 and Episode 2. Upon reading them, he immediately called up his bud Rob James-Collier (Thomas Barrow). Although Downton’s two Toms don’t share much beside their first names, off camera Allen and Rob make for one of Britain’s best bromances. Too bad they kind of hate each other on the show.

While Allen didn’t spill any specifics from the scripts, he did say “very exciting stuff happens in Episode 1 and continues into Episode 2.” Even more interesting, he teased that he “found out something I didn’t know” during Episode 1 and was “deeply saddened” by the revelation.

At the time, that tidbit left us in the dark but we’ve been watching the trailer on repeat since its debut at the end of August. That’s gotten the wheels turning — could that sad secret have to do with Phyllis Baxter (Raquel Cassidy)?

In second 29 of the trailer, we see her telling a lady we believe to be Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) that she has “a secret, a bad secret,” likely the same one held over her head by Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) throughout Season 4. Speaking of Baxter's nemesis, Thomas pops up looking suspicious just a couple of seconds later. Coincidence? We think not.

What do you make of our theory? Think the sad secret involves Baxter or someone else entirely? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
