The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 9 Spoiler Roundup — Everything to Know About “The Cell”

The Vampire Diaries is back after a week-long Thanksgiving hiatus, and it looks like the show is diving back into the Augustine Society’s dark past and Damon’s place in it. Basically, there will be torture. Here’s a roundup of what we know so far about Season 5, Episode 9 (“The Cell”).

There. Will. Be. Torture. As outlined in the intro, Episode 9 is allegedly going to include some intense torture scenes now that Damon is back in the Augustine Society’s clutches. Ian Somerhalder told TV Line, they are “really cool,” but also “brutal” and “crazy.” Nina was a little less enthusiastic about the bloodshed. She said, “It was disgusting. I’m not good at that kind of stuff and I hated watching it. I’ll probably have to close my eyes when I watch it on TV.” Yikes!

Flashbacks to 1953. We can guess from the promo pics that we will see some flashback-age to 1953, aka the year of Damon’s first stint as an Augustine vampire lab rat. How did Damon escape their clutches? And why has he never spoken about it again? Hopefully, these questions will be answered in this week’s episode.

Meet Enzo. This week, we will be introduced to a new recurring character, Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Enzo is a charismatic-yet-tortured friend from Damon’s past who is “back in town” to reconnect with his own friend. Judging by the promo pictures, “back in town” means in the Augustine Society’s clutches. Has Enzo been an Augustine vamp since 1953, or has he recently been recaptured?

Elena and Aaron grow closer. According to the episode synopsis, “Elena grows so concerned about Damon that she turns to Aaron for help.” In the promo, we see her telling Aaron that Dr. Wes is not all that he seems. It sounds like Aaron might actually believe her or at least begin to doubt his legal guardian. The synopsis tells us: “Aaron decides on a desperate course of action after a conversation with Dr. Wes.” Is the melancholic college boy finally wisening up to what’s going on around him?

Therapy, Caroline-style. Some people help friends work through their issues by lending an ear; Caroline, however, is more action-oriented. In Thursday’s episode, Caroline is applying her own aggressive treatment for Stefan’s PTSD: bringing the vault he was locked underwater in for three months and suggesting Stefan crawl inside of it. In this sneak peek, we see Caroline asking Stefan to confront his fears head-on. We can’t decide if this is a really good idea or a really bad one. From the looks of it, neither can poor Stefan. This must be the “unusual form of therapy” the synopsis was referring to.

Steferine moments! Stefan isn’t the only one struggling in this week’s episode. It seems that Katherine isn’t feeling any better since last episode’s failed suicide attempt. But Stefan is there for Katherine to help her face her problems, rather than run away from them. According to the synopsis, “Stefan continues to offer Katherine his support while trying to mask his own pain.” Everything’s going according to our Steferine Master Plan. Mwahaha!

Delena heart-to-heart. It sounds like Damon will eventually escape the Augustine Society’s clutches in time for a heart-to-heart with his girlfriend. According to the synopsis, “When Damon tells Elena about a terrible ordeal in his past that he has kept secret for decades, she shares the disturbing information she just learned about her own family.”

Which storyline are you most looking forward to in Episode 9? Sound off in the comments below!
