We’re still picking up the pieces of the Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale — Season 5, Episode 22 (“Home”) — and we suspect fans of the show are still rattled after that last scene of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham). In fact, we’d venture to say that many fans shed a few tears during the climactic conclusion — 16 percent, to be exact.
According to Canvs, a TV analytics service, there were 156,989 tweets about the finale, with 45,968 having emotional reactions to what was happening on the screen (aka that heartbreaking Delena farewell). What are some of the emotions that the loyal TVD audience — 91 percent female and 71 percent under the age of 19 — counted among their feels? Twenty-two percent went with “love,” 16 percent “cried,” 14 percent felt “hate,” and a solid 11 percent correctly thought “WTF.” Sounds about right!
Let’s inspect that “cried” emotion a little further — at what point of the episode did that feeling start to spike? That would of course be the very end of the episode, between 9 p.m. ET and 9:05 p.m. ET, right after Damon and Bonnie went into the light (whatever that meant). We’re not shocked that this was the show’s biggest moment, but at least you can rest assured knowing that we’ll see both of them return to the show in Season 6 — just…somewhere else.
This study gave us a lot of insight into fans of The Vampire Diaries. In fact, we can trace their evening post-finale by looking at the brands these followers have the best affinities with. It looks like there was some epic carbo-loading at Taco Bell, where fans ate their feelings. Then they probably headed to Walmart to purchase more tissues for a rewatch, leaving them super tired in the morning and in desperate need of Starbucks.
TVD fans are the best.
