The Walking Dead Season 5: Michonne Has “More of a Capacity to Connect With Everyone”

Michonne (Danai Gurira) has long been one of the most private and guarded characters on The Walking Dead, but throughout the show’s fourth season we’ve gradually seen her open up, first to the viewers via a series of emotional flashbacks to her pre-apocalyptic life as a girlfriend and mother and then to Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) as he struggled to come to terms with his own losses. We learned that Michonne had a lover and a son, both of whom were killed, that she never properly grieved for.

Yet as difficult as it was for Michonne to relive and retell certain parts of her past, Danai believes that in a way it’s made her stronger and better equipped to live in this world. “I feel like she’s been able to face the past that we never knew about and start to heal from it, which she hadn’t really done yet. Moving forward, she definitely has more of a capacity to connect with everyone around her,” the actress explains to SciFiNow.

So does this strengthened capacity to connect with others mean a romance could be on the horizon for Michonne is Season 5? “We’ll see,” Danai notes. “She’s a woman, you know? She’s alive, so that’s a good start.”

Yes, Michonne and at least 85 percent of her Team Prison pals are alive, but they’re trapped in a train car at Terminus and Michonne is without her most prized possession: her katana! “It’s an extension, she can’t go far without that thing near by,” Danai says of the powerful weapon. “Either it’s on her back or it’s in her hand, but it’s always there she found her post-apocalyptic identity through this weapon. The psychology is fascinating to explore and the more I train with it, the more I understand how it works for her in a mental sense.”

Not only do we hope Michonne and the others find a way out of that train car, but now we want to make sure she gets her prized katana back before the group moves onward!

Do you think Michonne will get out of the train car and get her katana back? Tell us your thoughts and theories below!
