The Walking Dead Season 5 Midseason Finale Has “Upwards of 800 Walkers,” Look For Tribute in Premiere
Every so often it’s easy to forget that zombies are a major threat on The Walking Dead. But as time goes by and more people go the way of the walker, it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid or manage them. Season 5 is meant to travel to several locations, including urban settings, so we could see heaps of walkers on par with the ones in downtown Atlanta in Season 1.
Greg Nicotero, who does great special effects/directing work and gives great teases in interviews, recently talked to the Huffington Post about Season 5. HuffPo mentioned how Greg’s team processed about 9,000 zombies in Season 4. They are only just past the halfway point in terms of shooting the 16 episodes of Season 5, but how many zombies will he be crafting this time?
“Oh, good lord,” Greg answered. “I can tell you that in the mid-season finale that we just finished shooting there were upwards of 800 walkers for just that episode. I haven't done the tally yet for this season, but being out in the world it's a little trickier to avoid zombies. When you're in the prison, you have a safe haven. The zombies aren't so much of an everyday occurrence, whereas in this season we're out in the world at some point so they're there.”
The more walkers, the better — they didn’t set up that Zombie School for nothing! Besides, we need an iconic walker for next year’s Season 5 DVD/Blu-ray set.
Speaking of iconic walkers, HuffPo asked if there would be more tribute walkers (like Bub in Season 4) in Season 5, since Greg likes to throw in those little Easter eggs for genre fans. “Yes, I would say that the tributes continue,” Greg said. “In Episode 501 there is a tribute, but it's a little more subtle, and this time it's not necessarily a zombie. But it's just something that I put in there.”
OK, so in the premiere itself, look for a subtle tribute … something … and remember there are more than 800 walkers shuffling over in Episode 8. We’re excited to see it all play out just one month from now!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
